WHAT WE DO
Tameside Racial Equality Council will offer you full, confidential advice and assurance on your case and will advise you on how you can utilise the provision of the Race Relations Act 1976 to protect what is your right.

Our service may range from giving you simple advice to representing your case at an Industrial Tribunal.  If we cannot deal with your matter we will refer you to a relevant agency.

We use the provisions of the Race Relations Act 1976 to:

work towards the elimination of racial discrimination, and
promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups.

USE THE LAW TO PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS
Here are some examples of cases where people have experienced racial discrimination:

In Job Recruitment
Mr Khan was twice told a salesperson post had been taken.  His son telephoned using an English-sounding name and a white friend also telephoned, both were offered interviews for the job.
In Promotion
The only Asian operator on a day shift was not allowed to apply for promotion as he was not in the grade immediately below.  Two white workers trained by him were able to apply and were appointed.
In Dismissal
A black senior executive was very successful in his work but dismissed.
In the Provision of Services
A British citizen of Black Caribbean origin was stopped from boarding a flight by check-in staff because she had a single ticket.
Racial abuse at work
Persistent jokes about Irish origin, which led to stress.
